Metastazis & Au Dessus: End of Chapter (Les Acteurs de l'Ombre)

Metastazis & Au Dessus: End of Chapter (Les Acteurs de l'Ombre)

There were no specific directions, the band gave me total freedom to provide my interpretation of the title. I interpreted 'End of a chapter' as plain death. And I wanted to tell a poetic story based on this very simple, universal fact that death is. And I think the Styx/Charon myth is poetic. I was impressed by how heavy and professional they were, and how I was enjoying how it sounded. It didn't change my life though because, after 25 years of eating my daily dose of extreme metal, I became extremely demanding, but hey, it was still way beyond an average band. The visual language as far as…

Robert Schober aka Roboshobo & Ghost: Cirice (Universal)

Robert Schober aka Roboshobo & Ghost: Cirice (Universal)

‘Cirice’ concept was inspirited by Brian De Palma film ‘Carrie’. The idea originated with Papa himself. He wanted to set the video in a school and do a talent show gone awry. Carrie was definitely the visual inspiration that myself and the DoP Sing Howe Yam settled on. They are the parents of the young boy playing Papa. We wanted them to have a creepy Rosemary's Baby vibe. I feel like the ending may have gotten a bit muddled. Unfortunately, we had a less than charitable site representative and were ushered out of the location before we really got everything I had hoped for. I wanted a little…

Napalm Death & Frode Sylthe: Apex Predator, Easy Meat (Century Media)

The band have been very much involved in the process of making this album artwork. And they tend to have a lot of ideas in which direction it all should go but was an organic process. So everybody is pitching in with stuff… so normally it starts off at in one direction and ends in a totally different direction. I’m am lucky to have a thorough brief and a lot of pictures for inspiration and I have the chance to ask a lot of the material and I was let in some sort of direction, but with all creative processes if a dynamic thing and it has a life of its own… the way it works it that I make…

Nestor Avalos & Bloodbath: Grand Morbid Funeral (Peaceville Records)

We started from the concept of the band and the name of the album 'Grand Morbid Funeral'. This was the determinant factor for the whole process 'a place of plague where the poor bury the dead' – Anders Nyström. We started with a couple of pieces that they choose from my site, then they picked the one that really works for this Monstrous and demonic carnage. Exist one special piece inspired by the Rat King phenomenon that consists in involve a number of rats intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, or feces also historically, various superstitions…

Sikth & Dan Mumford: Opacities (Peaceville Records)

Sikth & Dan Mumford: Opacities (Peaceville Records)

I have known most of the guys in SikTh for quite a long time, I grew up in Watford, the same town that SikTh came from, and was playing in several bands at the same time as SikTh back in the early 2000’s, so would have supported them a few times locally as well. It wasn’t until the reunion that I was able to work with them though, so it was really cool being able to work with the guys after so long.

Mikee always has quite a strong idea of what he wants with the imagery, which is always a good starting point. So generally he will send over his ideas, and then I will sketch something up with my…

Obituary & Andreas Marschall: Inked in Blood (Relapse Records)

Obituary & Andreas Marschall: Inked in Blood (Relapse Records)

The idea for ‘Inked in Blood’ was developed by the Tardy brothers and me, based on an early suggestion sketch, when the band decided to move visually in a different direction than in the albums before. In my recent artworks for Obituary, we always worked with the dragon creatures that were established in the band logo of ‘End complete’ and the figure of the ‘Executioner’ which had a brutal fantasy tone. For ‘Inked in Blood’ the band wanted to go back to the roots with references to the splatter genre. I loved the idea because I am a fan of classics like Tobe Hoopers ‘The Texas Chainsaw…
